NEW HIGH-LEVEL PERSPECTIVES ON DRUG LAWS
At the upcoming Summit of the Americas, heads of Central American states will raise an important debate on the viability of the current war on (some) drugs. However, according to this Guardian article, the Obama administration, also in attendance at the summit, “does not want to be seen as softening its support for prohibition".

POLICE OFFICER SPEAKS OUT AGAINST THE WAR ON (SOME) DRUGS
“As an active duty veteran police officer, I would love to publicly join Law Enforcement Against Prohibition and freely speak out against the drug war. However, I am scared, yes scared, to join LEAP publicly. Although many active duty law enforcers are already speaking out publicly with LEAP and maintaining their careers (more on them later), I believe I would be punished by my department for my advocacy or perhaps even fired."

DRUGS, BANKS AND WHOLESALE SLAUGHTER
“Mexico ’s descent into this inferno has been engineered by the leading US financial and political institutions, each supporting ‘one side or the other’ in the bloody “total war” which spares no one, no place and no moment in time. While the Pentagon arms the Mexican government and the US Drug Enforcement Agency enforces the “military solution”, the biggest US banks receive, launder and transfer hundreds of billions of dollars to the drug lords’ accounts, who then buy modern arms, pay private armies of assassins and corrupt untold numbers of political and law enforcement officials on both sides of the border."

PROFILING DRUG SMUGGLERS

“The Phase-III smuggling organization will make a financial investment in the political arena in an attempt to solicit information about who is being targeted. A Phase-III organization might offer its smuggling services to a government (i.e., make an offer to a government agency to fly secretive cargo shipments of weapons into Latin America) in order to be viewed in a different light in respect to law enforcement interventions. The organization would receive more favorable treatment, such as notification if the DEA was going to break up its smuggling enterprise or if information had been gathered about targeted individuals."

BACK TO THE LAB
FIXING THE ECONOMY?
As explained in a previous post, drug money and other illicit profits can help keep the world economy afloat in times of contracted money supplies like the current period. Here's a very interesting interview with Antonio Maria Costa of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, casting light on this troubling state of affairs.

HIDDEN MOTIVES PT. 2
A very interesting article from New York Times on the connections between the CIA, the invading armies, Afghan officials and the global drug trade. Keep in mind that the resulting multi-billion Dollar amounts are not laundered through pizzerias: During periods of limited liquid financial resources such as the current crisis, drug money and other illegal cash flows keep the economic carrousel going.
